Okay now, there's no shortage of ways to make money from home without much investment at all...but not all opportunities are equal. So here, let's detail out 5 of the best businesses you can run from the comfort of your own home with practically no money invested.

A great way to earn money from home, work directly with the sorts of people you want to work with, and gain skills and insight is to freelance.

Here, you could freelance as a graphic designer, a web designer, a photographer, a writer or editor...or pretty much any other service or skill you have that has a market need.

Learn how to build your small business website!

And, you often don't need anything more than what you already have -- a laptop, a smartphone, a portfolio of your past work, and an email address. That's it!

The big challenge here is drumming up business. If you're just getting started, it can take some hustle to get your name out and let people know what you can do, the caliber of your work, and how you can help them.

But with the internet, you can reach far beyond your local geographic area. Use sites like, Fivver, or to connect with paying clients all over the world.

Related to freelancing, you could also do consulting work from home. Here's how I distinguish between freelancing and consulting:

Freelancing is task-oriented: You'll be hired to build a website, write an article, design a business card, or complete some other kind of task.

Consulting is more strategy-oriented. Here, you could consult as a marketer, as an IT specialist, or as a social media expert.

So, you'll be hired to strategize, plan, and carefully develop tactics for your client, helping them achieve a specific result.

In fact, many freelancers often move into higher paid, less task-oriented consulting work. But first, of course, it's important to be qualified and experienced for the type of consulting you'll be doing.

And like a freelancer, you often don't need much more than what you already have -- a computer, your smartphone, testimonials or proof of work from satisfied customers...and your existing knowledge and skills.

Another popular business model is I suppose what you could call "ad-supported." Here, you make revenue by selling ad space

This could be ad space on your blog, in a newsletter you run, or even earning ad revenue on your YouTube videos.

Related to this, you could also earn money online through content that's sponsored, maybe in your podcast, on a blog post, or in a YouTube video you put together.

In fact, it's this business model that a lot of people are chasing online because they've seen the handful of people who've (supposedly) done well with this model.

However, the biggest challenge with this model is that you'll need an audience big enough, or targeted enough, for potential advertisers and sponsors to be interested.

Another big challenge is that if you join someone else's ad platform (like Adsense or YouTube ads) then you have no control over what you're paid, how you're paid...or if you'll continue to get be careful!

Another great way to make money from home is selling physical products online. Here, this could be any kind of product you make yourself, or you could sell other people's products.

So for example, if you do any kind of craft work...say leather work or hand-made crafts, you could sell these directly online.

Or, you could partner up with someone and sell their work on their behalf, essentially becoming their distributor.

Or you could sell products like vintage records, rare books, collectibles, or any other kind of product you could think of.

Often, this is called "flipping" -- where you find things at garage sales or discount stores and resell them online. Sites like Etsy, Amazon, and eBay make this easy...but it's still a lot of work.

Whether you're selling your own products or someone else's, I always recommend you set yourself up with a proper online store that you own and control yourself.

I talk about this often, and have a few posts that go into more if you're interested, just search my content for this kinda stuff.

Last but not least, here's one of my favourite business models that you can run from home: Selling some kind of digital product.

This is a huge topic that encompasses everything from stock photography and website templates, to software, ebooks, online courses, and more.

And what I love so much about this business model is that, because your product is digital, most of your business can be automated.

This means that you can set your website up to accept payments automatically, deliver the product to the customer automatically, handle your bookkeeping for you, and so on.

This totally frees you up to focus on customer service, create more digital products, and even to set less stringent hours and work less.

Now, these are just a few idea to get your business-juices flowing. There are of course many other ways to earn money from home. And, you can combine some of these business ideas together. For example, a consultant might also sell an ebook.

Or a freelancer might maintain a blog and make some side income via ad revenue. What's so great about home-based businesses is you can assemble them together to suit your needs, while also meeting the needs of your customers.
