When you go to make changes or run updates on your website, there's always the risk of things not working as expected...or in the worst case, you inadvertently blow your site up! Well if you're using WP Engine as your web host (smart choice!), then your site comes with something called a staging server. Staging servers make it very easy to make site changes and updates, test new layouts and plugins, and so on.
